In STEREO!

Stereo Sound at the Movies

The Full Experience
Past, Present & Future
Enter the world of Widescreen, 70mm, 3-D & other special presentation techniques

Ever thought while watching an old film I wonder if this was made in Stereo?
Well this site will try and answer questions like that
It's hoped to be able to add at least ONE New article per month written by me, plus Guest articles, so keep coming back... The links below are just the start.....

Please feel free to email me with info on titles you remembered seeing with stereo sound, and where you saw them, and when. You can even tell me about screenings on t.v., or video releases...for anywhere in the world.
Nothing is excluded, but obviously telling me that Star Wars was released in Dolby Stereo, would be of limited value. Telling me that it was shown in 70mm in Bolivia, however, would be of interest, as would details of a 4-track Magnetic screening in Greece, for instance, or of a StereoOptical presentation in Timbuktu...
So all information is welcome, but some is more welcome than others...and dates are especially useful.

On the UK-TV Watch page I list screenings of older pictures with stereo sound, and also ones which might be expected to be in stereo, which weren't. Listing more recent titles, unless there is a special reason for doing so, would be a bit pointless. Popeye, for instance, was released in the Cinemas in Kodak Stereo, but is always in mono, on UK tv broadcasts. So this would be included, but a stereo showing of Predator wouldn't be...because it would be expected to be shown in stereo... [Dolby Labs maintain a list of film titles on their own website, although this does not include details of 70mm print availability.]
Just pausing to Blow My Own Trumpet...if you've surfed the web you'll know that, with only a handful of exceptions, most sites that touch on Stereo Sound in Movies, do just that....they just touch on it!!!
This Site is Different...much of what you read here, you will not find anywhere else on the Web. In fact, even in currently available books, this site has little competition...So help me keep it that way...

Gameplan for Updates

I've been researching the subject for the best part of 20 years, and have amassed a huge amount of information, culled from Newspapers, Trade Journals, e.t.c.
The plan of action for the time being, is to post small articles of interest on specific topics:- MGM Releases of 1953/1954.....70mm Exhibition in Africa.....e.t.c. When sufficient articles are loaded then I can start to structure them to tell a coherent story.
But Hey!, knowledge is a two-way street, I need to hear from YOU!...Is there any old projectionist out there, for instance, who worked at a cinema showing Stereo prints, and kept notes of what they were, and maybe even how good they sounded...Or anyone like me who's done some research and has got it gathering dust, for lack of anyone to tell...Then you can have an article included here, or even if it's just a list of screenings it can be added. So if you've got a list of 70mm screenings in Outer Mongolia !!, get in touch...Even if your article is not in English, I'm sure that a translation can be arranged...Or if you've written an article, say, on Tohoscope, but don't have any details of which ones may have had Stereo Sound, then we can do a joint article, or I can add bits in as an appendix.
In short, if you have something to contribute, please do....don't be held back by reasons why you shouldn't !.
I'll try to post updates as often as possible, so please be patient....But this won't be one of those sites that goes for months without any changes...So keep calling back...
If you have any specific requests, please email me. You can also email me to tell me it's a Great Site....or that it's riddled with errors, in which case please point them out !.

The Loew's Jersey is a "not-for-profit" Arts and Entertainment Center, being restored by a team of dedicated volunteers. Anyone wishing to help with the work should contact them. They also need donations, both in the form of money, and equipment. They are currently equipped for Perspecta Stereophonic Sound screenings, and also have a working Vitaphone system; but they still need, for instance, Dolby Stereo cells for their soundheads, Magnetic Sound equipment and 70mm capability (although they have been promised a pair of Norelco's). Any donations would be appreciated; and it really sounds like a worthy cause to support.
